Hi all:

I apologize for the weird topic title, but I don't really know how to explain it well enough.

My question is if there is a way to get the Windows Messenger icon out of my system tray when I log onto my computer. I have disabled the run when Windows starts checkbox in Windows Messenger, and I have also unchecked the run in the backgrounhd box, but somehow I think that has to do with when WM is running anyway. I have also disabled the passport for my account, so that if I go into Windows Messenger at all, I have to fully type my email adress and password each time, it isn't attached or saved anywhere. I'm not sure why the icon keeps coming up in my system tray, though. The icon says "windows messenger, not signed in", which is correct, but why would it even be there if the program isn't running, anyway? Any help as to what's going on and how to fix it would be appreciated. Feel free to either reply here or email me.
Thanks in advance.

The icon keeps appearing because WM is set to run at startup in the registry. To disable this, you have to delete the value in the registry that causes it to load at startup. To do this:
1. Make a backup of your registry and create a restore point (you can never be too safe, and if you post a topic that you fucked up your registry, I'm not gonna help ya).
2. Go to start -> run and type "regedit" without typing the quotation marks.
3. You will be placed in a tree view. Navigate to hkey_current_usersoftwaremicrosoftwindowscurrent_versionrun
4. Tab into the list view. You will find a key for "msmsgs" which is Windows Messenger. If you have MSN Messenger installed as well, you may have two of these keys.
5. If you don't know which key to delete, just delete them both. You can always re-add them by checking the "run when Windows starts" box or re-installing the software.
6. Close the registry editor by hitting Alt F4.
7. Make sure the check boxes to "sign onto Messenger at startup" boxes are unchecked in Outlook and Outlook Express.
8. Start posting your techie questions to www.savemybutt.com where more people can help you so I don't have to keep answering them.
